JOHI x Square Objects
This tray is available in both a standard size as well as a smaller version (The Tiny Topo Tray).
The Topo Tray and other trays in our home decor collection are made through a collaboration with Square Objects, an artisan home goods designer also from Santa Cruz, California, and operated by husband-and-wife duo Elijah Clancy and Lohana Richmond.
Square Objects joined the JOHI family in 2023 to bring their sculptural designs to life in natural hardwood lumber, which they previously created from concrete.
We are a proud production partner of Square Objects, whose design language is inspired by minimalism, the central California landscape, and the rituals of day-to-day life. Their inspiration and texture-forward designs are naturally compatible with JOHI’s modern organic home design.
Design Story: The Topo Wood Display Tray
Our line of JOHI x Square Objects trays incorporates repeated textures throughout each design, which is made through a combination of machine-forward and human-forward steps. You can explore the Topo Round Wood Jewelry Tray, Groove Tray, and Ripple Tray to view each style.
The line of trays is manufactured from premium lumber and direct off-cuts from our in-house furniture production. We use clear wood sections, which limit the appearance of natural knots and other inclusions, creating a modern feel.
Once our display trays are carved out, we sand them smooth to the touch before applying non-toxic, no-VOC finishes. The result is a unique, sculptural home accent that you can use for organization or to display jewelry, kitchen items, accessories, and more.
Are there specific care instructions for this product?
In general, you can care for this tray just like you care for a wood cutting board. When you feel or see the wood is drying out, you can apply a home-friendly, food-safe wood oil or wood wax.
Additional tips: Be sure to refresh all surfaces at once–the top, sides, and bottom. A little of your chosen care product typically goes a long way. Carefully read and follow the directions of your specific care product, as application guidelines and material disposal (like paper towels or cloths) requirements vary.

How do customers typically use this tray?
Many people use this wood display tray for their jewelry – wedding & engagement rings, your go-to daily rings, stud earrings, watches – whether at their bedside table, on their bathroom vanity, next to the kitchen sink, or at an entryway.
Other unique and fitting lifestyle uses include: serving appetizers (at home or for catering), serving salt, a unique paper weight, or simply a sculptural addition to your coffee table.
Can this tray be used in the kitchen?
Yes, the display tray can be used as decor or for serving purposes. We finish this tray in a food-safe wood wax that offers water resistance, a soft sheen, and easy future refinishing.
Tips for kitchen care:
- Do not allow your tray to sit in water or in the sink for any period of time.
- Do not clean in a dishwasher. Sustained exposure to hot water and steam will damage the product.
- Wipe or handwash with warm (NOT hot) water and a gentle soap, using a soft cloth or sponge. Do not use an abrasive cleaning tool, as this will quickly wear through the finish and potentially scratch the product.
- It is best to let the tray dry while propped up at an angle, on its side, or on a rack, giving both top and bottom surfaces plenty of airflow to dry equally.

Yes. We make our products from a combination of raw materials and sourced components (ex. metal hardware) directly in our manufacturing workshop, located in Watsonville, California.
