JOHI X Square Objects
The Groove Tray and Groove 5 Tray are both part of our collaboration with Square Objects, an artisan home goods designer also from Santa Cruz, California, and operated by husband-and-wife duo Elijah Clancy and Lohana Richmond. The pair joined the JOHI family in 2023 to transform their original tray designs from concrete to natural hardwood lumber.
We are a proud production partner of Square Objects, whose design language is inspired by minimalism, the central California landscape, and the rituals of day-to-day life. Their inspiration and texture-forward designs are naturally compatible with the modern organic home design we cultivate here at JOHI.

Enjoyable Organization for Creative Routines
The Groove Tray was designed for the curated creative–the one who wants to keep their favorite pen and pencil at their side while maintaining an organized desk. You may be a writer, an illustrator, a graphic designer, or a videographer. Your strength is using tactile analog practices to elevate your work every day!
At JOHI, we commonly use the Groove Tray at our cutting mats to hold an X-Acto knife, a utility blade, and a small pocket ruler. Over time, we’ve learned that our customers also keep the Groove Tray at their bedside tables, dressers, and bathroom vanities to hold accessories for other daily routines, like essential oil rollers for winding down in the evening.
The Groove 5 Tray is an expanded wood desk organizer to support even more storage for your favorite design tools.
How do customers typically use this tray?
You can use the Groove Tray as a wood desk organizer for pens, pencils, and other utensils, or to organize other everyday items. Our customers have used it to organize everyday items on their bedside tables, dressers, and bathroom vanities.
Can this tray be used in the kitchen?
Yes, the Groove Tray can be used for serving purposes. For example, you might be serving a small rolled appetizer for date night or plating small chocolates for guests. We finish this tray in a food-safe wood wax that offers water resistance, a soft sheen, and easy future refinishing.
For kitchen use, use the following care instructions:
- Do not allow your tray to sit in water or in the sink for any period of time.
- Do not clean in a dishwasher. Sustained exposure to hot water and steam will damage the product.
- Wipe or handwash with warm (NOT hot) water and a gentle soap, using a soft cloth or sponge. Do not use an abrasive cleaning tool, as this will quickly wear through the finish and potentially scratch the product.
- It is best to let the tray dry while propped up at an angle, on its side, or on a rack, giving both top and bottom surfaces plenty of airflow to dry equally.
Is this made in the USA?
Yes. We are a wood-focused manufacturer! We make our products from a combination of raw materials and sourced components (ex. metal hardware) directly in our manufacturing workshop, located in Watsonville, California.
For collaboration products, we always identify if we work with other independent craftspeople, manufacturing studios, and fellow product designers.
Do you ship across the USA?
Yes. We ship orders nationwide, including Hawaii (where we were founded!).
Some products ship fully assembled. Some products ship flat for assembly once received.
