JOHI X Square Objects
The Topo Round Tray and other trays in our home decor collection are made through a collaboration with Square Objects, an artisan home goods designer also from Santa Cruz, California, and operated by husband-and-wife duo Elijah Clancy and Lohana Richmond.
The pair originally created the tray designs from concrete, but they sought a healthier manufacturing process and joined the JOHI family in 2023 to bring their sculptural designs to life in natural hardwood lumber.
We are a proud production partner of Square Objects, whose design language is inspired by minimalism, the central California landscape, and the rituals of day-to-day life. Their inspiration and texture-forward designs are naturally compatible with the modern organic home design we cultivate here at JOHI.
Design Story: The Topo Round Wood Jewelry Tray
Our line of JOHI x Square Objects trays is made through a combination of machine-forward and then human-forward steps, which allow us to achieve the repeated textures across the Topo Wood Jewelry Tray and Display Tray, Groove Tray, and Ripple Tray.
Before any wood gets carved out, this story begins with the lumber. For our small batch production, we use a mix that includes full-length boards and direct offcuts from our in-house furniture production. We opt to create our trays from clear wood sections, which means we limit the appearance of natural knots and other inclusions in the wood for a more modern and less rustic final texture.
Once our trays are carved out, we sand them smooth to the touch before applying non-toxic, no-VOC finishes. The result is a unique, sculptural home accent that you can use on its own as decor or as a base for personal organization.
How do I use this wood jewelry tray?
The Topo Wood Jewelry is intentionally designed as an accent piece for versatile use. You can use it on its own as tabletop or wall decor, or fill the flowing contourswith personal items. Our customers like using the tray in their bedroom or bathrooms to organize jewelry, or in entryways as a more artistic key tray.
Is this made in the USA?
Yes. We are a wood-focused manufacturer based in Santa Cruz, California. We make our products from a combination of raw materials and sourced components (e.g. metal hardware) directly in our manufacturing workshop.
For collaboration products, we always identify if we work with other independent craftspeople, manufacturing studios, and fellow product designers.
Do you ship across the USA?
Yes. We ship orders nationwide, including Hawaii (where we were founded!).
Some products ship ready to use, like the Topo Trays and our other home decor, while others ship flat for assembly once received.
