Getting Back to the Basics With a Simple Wood Desk

The Fundamental Desk is an evolution from one of our earlier styles—The Kamehana Desk. While that design offers hand-woven shelving for storage, the Fundamental is a simple wood desk for more streamlined use at home or work.

This design offers the best of both worlds: Solid hardwood and a flat-pack design, making it easy to assemble, disassemble, and move. Four components come ready to assemble with a provided hex key—the desk top, left- and right-side desk legs, and a stretcher across the back of the desk.

True to our vision for the Fundamentals Collection, this design gets back to the basics with a simple, sturdy, and reliable desk.

Hand-Selected Boards for Durability and Design

With such a simple desk design, we aim to amplify and celebrate the materials used. For this variant of the Fundamental Desk, we sourced high-quality White Ash from our regional suppliers. Our team crafts the entire design from rough milled lumber— including legs, stretcher, and tabletop.

One of the most important steps is laying out a cohesive desktop for this design. Wood boards can vary naturally in color and grain, so we review and plan how different board sections can come together to form a natural yet aesthetic desktop.

Instead of using one slab for each desktop, we opt for using 5- to 6-inch-wide boards. This means each desktop has fewer seams than if it were made from smaller widths, and using multiple boards makes for a more stable desktop.

Can I use this as an office desk?

Yes! Our 24” x 49” size is best suited as a writing desk or small office desk, while the bigger 30” x 54” size is perfect if you need more space for your laptop, monitor, desk organizer, and other essentials.

Can I pick this desk up in Santa Cruz?

Yes, this variant of the Fundamental Desk is currently in stock and available for pick-up in our Santa Cruz showroom. We also ship throughout the U.S.

Is this desk easy to assemble?

Yes, the Fundamental Desk ships flat-packed with four pieces in one box that are easy to assemble with the provided hex key. All you need to do is attach the back legs to the stretcher and attach the legs to the desktop, which should only take a few minutes of assembly time.

Is this made in the USA?

Yes. We are a wood-focused manufacturer! We make our products from a combination of raw materials and sourced components (ex. metal hardware) directly in our manufacturing workshop, located in Watsonville, California.

For collaboration products, we always identify if we work with other independent craftspeople, manufacturing studios, and fellow product designers.

Can I order a sample?

Yes. Wood samples can be requested through this form.
