Celebrating Our Environmental Partners

Celebrating Our Environmental Partners

This month, we’re celebrating our first full year as a business member of 1% for the Planet! That means we commit 1% of all sales to support nonprofit sustainability initiatives.

WHY? Our favorite way of defining the 1% commitment is the cost of doing business. We’re not experts on our environment. However, through the materials, technology, and processes we use, we do have an impact on it. It only makes sense to funnel a portion of every sale to environmental stewards. At 1% for the Planet, approved environmental partners work within six primary issue areas: climate, food, land, pollution, water, and wildlife.

Our environmental partners to date include:

Pacific Forest Trust • @pacific_forest_trust, Elkhorn Slough Foundation • @elkhornslough_org, and 1% for the Planet itself • @1percentftp.

Pacific Forest Trust is an accredited land trust that safeguards forests and sustains forest economies. Since 1993, they have worked with landowners, agencies, and environmental nonprofit partners to make it easier and more rewarding to do good things for the forests on which we all depend. They are the only conservation organization that focuses on private forests in California, Oregon, and Washington, and they have conserved more than 270,000 acres of regional forests. By protecting these forests, Pacific Forest Trust and their partners also protect wildlife habitats and water sources to build resilient landscapes on the Pacific coast.

Elkhorn Slough Foundation is an accredited land trust that works to conserve and restore the nearby Elkhorn Slough and its watershed. Today, it protects 4,200 acres of land in the watershed, and it conducts outreach, education, and research as a partner of the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. The foundation has actively been involved in restoring key habitats that include tidal wetlands, coastal prairie, oak woodlands, freshwater ponds, riparian corridors, and maritime chaparral.

1% for the Planet inspires smart environmental giving, by businesses and individuals alike. Founded in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, the founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, it has since certified more than $435 million in support to approved environmental partners.

1% is a global movement that we are proud to be a part of. According to organization, only 3% of total philanthropy in the United States goes to environmental causes. We all have an opportunity to increase that number. Keep an eye out for other 1% for the Planet members when you’re shopping. Whether through your purchases or through your own business, we hope you’ll join us.
