Creating An Elegant Wood Bench With Cushion Upholstery
The Whispering Bench comes in natural and black-stained hardwood with customization options for cushion color and length. You can also keep an eye on the versions we have in stock and ready to ship.
As part of our Dusk & Dawn collection, this design was inspired by everyday moments and coastal living, with expert craftsmanship emphasizing modern curves and rounded edges. The Whispering Bench is upholstered with a drop-in cushion as an elegant design approach that still emphasizes and celebrates the hardwood frame.
While the split-cushion layout is perfect for boutique retail spaces and waiting areas, it can also provide a spark of visual interest in modern homes. The full-length cushion offers versatile use throughout the home, from a comfortable seat at the end of your bed to dining seating that fits multiple kids and adults.
Comfort and Quality at Every Step of the Process
We work with regional wood suppliers in Northern and Central California to stock dry, consistent, and premium lumber, including the White Ash used for the Whispering Bench. Starting with long boards, we cut and heavily round each component's edge profile. In combination with smooth sanding, you can comfortably sit with your hands curled around the edge to truly enjoy interacting with the piece.
The cushioned benches are complete with upholstery provided by San Jose-based Aby’s Upholstery. Each cushion uses a sturdy Baltic birch plywood panel layered with high-resiliency foam and hypoallergenic, moisture-resistant batting. Altogether, this allows us to create a low-profile, comfortable, and durable cushion.
How should I care for this cushioned bench?
We designed this bench to be easy to clean and use anywhere inside the home. Sensuede is one of our standard fabric options because it’s rated for commercial performance and is stain-resistant, water-repellent, and anti-static. The wool blend bouclé mixes natural and synthetic fibers for a soft and comfortable hand feel while also offering durability.
Even in your dining area, any spills can easily be blotted out with a damp cloth–try to avoid wiping, especially with the wool blend bouclé. Any serious spills can typically be lifted out with a wet-dry upholstery vacuum.
For regular cleaning, we recommend vacuuming the seat, and the drop-in cushion is easy to lift, so you can access the cushion sides wellto remove dust or crumbs. For more help, view our general care tips and advice for wood furniture.
How do I assemble the bench?
This bench comes flat-packed in three pieces, making it easy to move with you and disassemble/reassemble.
To assemble, flip the bench top upside down onto a clean, protective surface (a sheet or moving blanket). Position the legs and their pre-attached steel plates into the routed pockets. When you align the holes in each steel plate to the threaded inserts, simply twist in the provided bolts and tighten evenly with the provided Allen key. Then, carefully carry the bench up onto its feet! Be careful of the bench weight, and ask for helping hands if you’re worried the bench is too heavy for you to lift and rotate alone.
How much weight can the bench hold?
This bench can hold a few hundred pounds without worry. Avoid leaning or tipping the bench in unexpected ways, as the bench is designed to sit flat on its two legs for proper use.
Can I use this bench indoors and outdoors?
This is an indoor bench and rated for interior use only. For residential use, it is covered by our standard 5-year residential warranty.
Is this made in the USA?
Yes! JOHI is a Santa Cruz furniture studio that designs and manufactures our furniture with solid wood. We make our products from a combination of raw materials and sourced components (like metal hardware) directly in our manufacturing workshop.
