Design Story: The Simple Stool
At JOHI, we understand the moving process intimately. Going through all your things and packing is already difficult enough, and then there’s that awkward period when your house doesn’t have any furniture. For a while, it’s nights eating off boxes in an empty living room.
The Simple Stool was born out of a desire to make your home a little more flexible, without sacrificing design or quality. Unlike temporary furniture, it’s a staple piece that can stick with you over time, but it’s just as easy to assemble and take apart.
A Flat Pack Favorite
To design the Simple Stool, we started with the goal of making it flat pack, with no bolts or tricky hardware. A distinct difference from most baltic birch flat pack products is that we prioritized edge faces that were sanded smooth to the touch with rounded edge profiles.
Over the years, we refined the design details and manufacturing process, with attention to the unseen components that keep the Simple Stool confidently held together while it is picked up and moved around daily. To this day, we make small yet impactful improvements to the design; the most recent iteration includes small pre-installed clips that allow for easier disassembly and reassembly.
Made of three pieces, it's easy to put together in less than a minute. Perfect for modern homes and businesses, it can move with you and adapt to your needs.
Does this ship assembled?
No, the Simple Stool arrives flat pack style, with each of the three pieces stacked safely in a box.
This is also how you can store it when you pack it up for a road trip, or when you need to leave it in a storage unit while you travel the world.
It takes less than a minute to assemble the slip-fit pieces. No screws needed.
How heavy is it? How much weight can it hold?
Each Simple is roughly 9 pounds (4 kg).
But it can hold a heck of a lot more than 9 pounds. We regularly use the Simple stool around our workshop and studio office–ften for sitting, but also to regularly hold a few hundred pounds of lumber.
This product is great for sitting, displaying, and as a general table surface.
It is not intended as a step stool. We do not recommend using it for tipping-prone activities.

Can I use this for seating?
Yes! The 18” tall option is ideal dining chair height, and the 24” tall works great as a counter stool. The sturdy Baltic Birch plywood ensures a reliable seat anywhere in your home. Customers even love it as a handy extra chair for when guests come over.
Can I use this as a table?
Yes! The Simple Stool is versatile, and you can use it as a side table, nightstand, entry bench, cat perch, and much more.
For table use, we recommend using coasters for cold drinks and mats for plants.
We use hardwax oil as a healthy, home-friendly finish, which does have liquid resistance, but sitting water can stain the wood. Be sure to wipe up spills immediately. For spot touch-ups, you can use Osmo hardwax oil or similar products.
Can I use it outside?
The Simple Stool is currently rated for interior use only. We finish the product in a nontoxic hardwax oil that is zero VOC, thus better for our homes' and businesses' indoor air quality! This finish is easy to maintain for years to come.

Is this made in the USA?
Yes. We are a wood-focused manufacturer based in Santa Cruz, California. We make our products from a combination of raw materials and sourced components (e.g. metal hardware) directly in our manufacturing workshop.
For collaboration products, we always identify if we work with other independent craftspeople, manufacturing studios, and fellow product designers.
Do you ship across the USA?
Yes. We ship orders nationwide, including Hawaii (where we were founded!).
Some products ship fully assembled. Other products, like the Simple Stool, ship flat for assembly once received.
